I just finished scheduling my next six platelet donations with the Red Cross, which will carry me through to the end of March. Yes, for the first three months of 2010 I will be donating platelets every two or three weeks. Can you say "ouch"?

Also, would anyone care to join me? ^_-

Yesterday I was at another of the libraries in my system working on computers. On the way there I stopped for gas, and wound up with an even-dollar total, which is pretty unusual when you're filling up the tank. Many hours and miles later, I stopped at the same gas station, at the same pump, and put in the same amount of gas to fill my tank. The total price was the same, and the amount of gas pumped differed by one thousandth of a gallon. Weird......

Today I edited a wiki page on a Warmachine model. I know that is a sign of obsessive behavior, but my major reason for joining was to correct a couple of typos posted on a page about a model which had convinced me to start a second faction. Which is probably also a sign of obsessive behavior...... ^_^;;

Anyway, for those who are curious, here's my contribution to Battle College, for as long as my contribution remains unchanged, anyway:

Does this count as geeky even for me?

Well, November has ended, and with it National Novel Writing Month. Alas, my attempt at a novel ended well before the end of the month, with less than six thousand words written. I discovered that it's important to have enough of a plot ready to go the distance in the novel, and I only had enough developed for the short introduction. Maybe this is a hint to go back and work on revising the novel I finished last year ^_^;;

The zebra-striped thing threatening to eat my poor Scion belongs to [info]darksidecookie, who needed help moving it. I was glad to help, though I'm really not used to driving without my rearview mirror. It felt pretty claustrophobic, actually, but car, driver, and poof chair made it in one piece ^_^

Book Club III: Attack of the Technothriller

Yesterday the book club assembled to discuss Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October. This was rather different from our previous novels; obviously, it's not in a medieval/fantasy setting, but it's also much more heavily technical rather than character-driven. It's the one I had the most difficulty swimming through (no pun intended), and the one I least enjoyed. The discussion, however, was interesting, including a discussion of the Cold War (which to my dismay some of the book club members are too young to really remember; I'm feeling a bit old again ^_^;; ).
Details follow )
So far this was the least well-received of our selections, though even its worst critic (which may well have been me) found something positive about it. Again, if I've forgotten anything important please feel free to let me know!

Next month: Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.

NaNoWriMo flailing......

I had a chance to sit down and write this evening, and nearly doubled my previous word count. Unfortunately I'm still at about a third of where I need to be, though ^_^;; I'm at just over five thousand words (I'm too lazy to find the code for the widget right now ^_^;; ), with over a quarter of the month gone. So I'm going to need to put my nose to the grindstone this week to get back on schedule. If I continue to write twenty-five hundred words a day I'll make the 50,000 by the end of the month. I think Veterans' Day will be my big catch-up day. I may be able to write ten thousand words then, which would go a long way to getting me back on track.

I survived my seminar, and actually learned something about library advocacy in the process. I also learned exactly how much money an organization like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is willing to shell out for such training--the various books and binders I received ended up being as thick as the new edition of HERO System--and almost as heavy ^_^;;

The hotel was the Hyatt Regency on the St. Louis Riverfront, which is one of the nicest hotels (if not the nicest) I've ever stayed in. The food was overabundant and excellent; needless to say, I did not go hungry there.

Of course, there were drawbacks to my time there; the most obvious for me being the lost time to write my NaNoWriMo novel. As of November 6, I'm at 2500 words, which is about a quarter of what I need to have written ^_^;; Hopefully inspiration will strike soon; otherwise, I'll have a partially-finished novel at the end of the month......

So, with November comes National Novel Writing Month. I've participated in NaNoWriMo for the past couple of years, finishing last year's novel. This year I've committed myself to writing another novel during the month of November, and hopefully my subject will lend itself to novel-length ^_^;; Wish me luck!

Seminar?!?

I just got reminded by my boss that I'm supposed to go to a seminar--this week. Tomorrow, to be specific ^_^;;

I remembered talking about it with him, but I'd forgotten when it was. And given everything going on in my life recently, I completely forgot about it.

So now I'm scrambling to make sure my days are covered (I'll be gone through Thursday), and hopefully will get my laundry done tonight so I'll have everything ready to go tomorrow afternoon.

We need this man in public office. Now.

Again, I've been reading Sixth Doctor Colin Baker's weekly column, and have once again been struck by exactly how much sense the man makes. In this week's entry, he points out the folly of excessive warnings and the litigious society we live in. This man needs to be in charge of a county, a country, or the world--but he won't, because he's got too much curmudgeonly common sense.

Maybe this means I'm becoming a curmudgeon as well......

Today the good maniacs at Privateer Press released pictures of the new versions of the Ironclad and Defender warjacks which can be built using the plastic kit releasing next year. I have one major complaint, though: the Defender, though built on the same chassis as the Ironclad, has different shoulders which are unfortunately not reflected in the new kit (pictures may be found here for the original and here for the new one). I'll have to use the kit to build an Ironclad or Cyclone (a new warjack whose rules have yet to be released), or else modify it somewhat to make a proper Defender once it's released. (This implies I'm getting more than one kit, since I would like to try out the Cyclone ^_^;; ). Or I could invest in a few more metal Defender kits--I only have two of them, after all, and they are my favorite heavy 'jack......

Ooh, shiny ^_^

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? Are you going to wear coordinating costumes with a friend or partner? Did you buy something pre-fab or make it yourself?

HERO System Sixth Edition

HERO System is the venerable all-in-one-box roleplaying game which first debuted (as Champions) in 1981. As of this month its sixth edition has been released.

For those of you familiar with HERO or Champions, you'll recall that it's a very number-intensive game which allows players to tailor their characters' abilities exactly the way they want them to be. Which means it's also a pain in the neck to do the math ^_^;; This hasn't changed in 6E; the system's still pretty much what it's always been, though some things have been simplified (Comeliness is no longer a stat, for instance).

However, it's obviously a system which has evolved over the years rather than drastically rewriting everything a la D&D. This is obvious in the thickness of the previous edition, which could stop low-caliber bullets. And in the new edition, that's the thickness of Volume 1--yes, it's been split up into two titanic tomes, the first (and larger) containing character creation, and the second containing the rules on playing in the environment. It's a massive investment (in more ways than one), but it's worth it, assuming you can find anyone not intimidated by the size of the rulebooks and the sheer amount of stats in the game......

Thanks to the points I got for getting Champions Online through GameStop, I was able to buy two extra costume slots for all my characters ^_^ Hooray for microtransactions which don't cost me anything!

Today is the third day of work I've missed because of whatever I caught last week. It's mostly to rest up and be sure I'm over it, since other than a coughing spell when I first woke up I'm doing fairly well. I'm going to take it easy today (other than laundry, probably) and so hopefully rest up enough to recover from this so I can actually work tomorrow......

The gift of Tobias Vaughn...

Before Doctor Who villain extraordinaire Kevin Stoney passed away last year, he made a truly generous decision on what to do with the royalties from his many appearances on television:

I remember him best as International Electromatics head Tobias Vaughn from the 1968 Patrick Troughton story "The Invasion", but longtime fans would probably cite his portrayal of Mavic Chen from "The Daleks' Masterplan" three years earlier as his most famous Who villain. Needless to say, in real life he must have been thoroughly generous and kind.
